The International Diploma in Safety Engineering (IDSE) is a Level 6, Qualifi endorsed qualification open to everyone, from those completely new to health and safety, to experienced practitioners looking to formalise and deepen their knowledge. No prior OHS qualification is required to enrol.
What sets IDSE apart is how it teaches. Complex concepts in occupational health, safety science, and risk engineering are explained using everyday examples and plain-English analogies, the kind of explanations that make ideas click, not just stick to a page. Whether you are new to the field or a seasoned practitioner, the content is designed to build genuine understanding, not just exam-passing familiarity.
The qualification consists of two units, each assessed through a 24-hour online subjective open book examination. Three attempts are included. Learning is delivered through a structured, audio-narrated e-learning platform, so you can study at your desk, on your commute, or anywhere in between.
IDSE is equally relevant for business directors and managers who want to understand the safety systems within their organisation, those planning a career switch into OHS, and experienced practitioners ready to build a more analytical, science-grounded understanding of occupational safety performance.
Not every qualification is safety engineering.
The International Diploma in Safety Engineering (IDSE) is the first qualification of its kind, the one that defined what a safety engineering diploma should be. Since 2017 it has earned an enviable reputation across the Gulf countries, where it is recognised by employers and held by leading HSE corporate directors and managers in oil & gas, construction, and heavy industry.
IDSE is renowned for its innovative approach to assessment. Instead of memory-test exams, learners sit subjective, open book examinations that demand genuine understanding, and every graduate completes a personal closing interview before a certificate is issued. An IDSE is earned, never simply purchased. This is why its alumni have progressed to CertIOSH, CMIOSH, and even CFIOSH grades.
The pedigree speaks for itself. IDSE held IOSH accreditation for five years, a distinction that sets it apart in its field. That is a distinction none of its imitators has ever achieved.
BCSP · USAIDSE is recognised under the Qualified Equivalent Program of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), USA. Successful IDSE holders are awarded TSP (Transitional Safety Practitioner) status, and their ASP examination is exempted on the route to CSP certification.
Professionals will need to meet the graduate degree and 4 years of experience requirements for CSP eligibility, in addition to TSP status.
IDSE is designed for everyone, you do not need prior OHS experience to start. Whether you are brand new to the field or an experienced practitioner, the course builds your understanding from first principles using plain language and everyday examples. Thousands of learners from all walks of life have achieved this diploma since 2017.
Safety officers, advisors, and coordinators who want to build systems-level thinking and advance to senior roles.
Process engineers, maintenance engineers, and technical specialists working in high-risk operational environments.
Leaders who carry safety accountability and want to make genuinely informed decisions, not just rely on sign-off from a safety team.
Professionals from any background (HR, nursing, engineering, management) who want to move into the growing OHS field and need a credible, recognised starting qualification.
Occupational hygienists, occupational health nurses, and health professionals who work at the interface of science and safety.
Line managers and operations leaders with safety responsibility who want to make better, more evidence-based decisions.
Risk analysts, loss prevention professionals, and EHS consultants focused on proactive hazard identification.
Professionals seeking a structured, rigorous diploma as a stepping stone to senior OHS roles, with a recognised route towards CSP certification through the BCSP Qualified Equivalent Program.
Every lesson in IDSE comes with professional audio narration. You don't need to be sitting at a desk with your eyes glued to a screen to make progress, put your earphones in and let the content come to you.
Commuting to work? On a long drive? Travelling between sites? Taking a walk? These are all productive study sessions with IDSE. The narrated content is designed to be clear, engaging, and self-contained, so you genuinely learn while you go about your day.
Each unit is supported by structured self-paced e-learning content and assessed through a dedicated 24-hour online subjective open book examination. Three attempts are included.
This unit provides a comprehensive understanding of how Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) are structured, how they operate in practice, and how organisations can drive meaningful, evidence-based continual improvement.
This unit develops a scientific and engineering understanding of occupational hazards, how they emerge, how the body and environment respond, and how technology and data can be applied to improve prevention and control.
By completing both units, you will be equipped with a deeper, more scientifically grounded understanding of occupational health and safety, moving well beyond checklist-based compliance.
Both IDSE units are assessed through online subjective open book examinations that can be completed remotely, at a time that suits you.
After enrolment, gain immediate access to the self-paced e-learning content for both units on your learner dashboard.
Work through the explanation slides, examples, and scenario-based activities before attempting the exam for each unit.
Take the 24-hour online subjective open book exam for each unit from any location that suits you. Three attempts are included.
After your exams, an online, video-recorded closing interview confirms the authenticity of your work. The interview is available on demand, so you can choose a date and time that suits you.
After both exams and the closing interview, receive your Qualifi endorsed International Diploma in Safety Engineering certificate.
A complete learning and assessment experience designed to build real understanding, fit around your life, and support a credible professional qualification.
IDSE has been shaping OHS careers since 2017. From career switchers starting from scratch to experienced practitioners seeking formal recognition, thousands of learners have used this qualification as a genuine stepping stone in the health and safety profession.
Before enrolling on any safety engineering diploma, consider the following:
Your career is built on credibility. Protect it by choosing the original.
Most safety qualifications teach you what to do. IDSE teaches you why it works. Understanding the science of how hazards develop, how systems fail, and how evidence-based controls are selected transforms how you approach every safety challenge, in any industry, at any level.
Understand how OHSMS components interact across operations, from leadership commitment to frontline control.
Apply scientific principles to identify weak signals before they develop into significant failures or harm.
Select and justify controls using chemistry, physics, toxicology, and data, not just intuition or procedure.
Understand how modern monitoring, sensing, and data tools give safety professionals earlier, more reliable insight.
Join the 2,500+ learners who have undertaken the IDSE since 2017. Whether you are new to OHS or an experienced practitioner, the audio-narrated content fits around your life, learn on your commute, on the road, or at your own pace. Every IDSE holder has genuinely earned their diploma.
